Difference Between Iced Americano and Cold Brew

With the heat beating down on us this summer, it’s sometimes too hot to sip on a hot cup of coffee. It is a great time to explore other, colder alternatives, and luckily there are a lot of options to choose from. If you’ve ever caught yourself standing at the counter, pondering the difference between a cold brew and an iced americano, this one is for you!

The cold brew is trending across cafes in the country and is now a regular feature on their menus. Cold brews now stand alongside other cold beverages like iced americanos, iced lattes, etc. Now, you’re probably wondering what the difference is?

Cold brewed coffee is brewed at room temperature or with cold water, rather than hot water, for a period of 14-24 hours, and then filtered to give you a cup without any sediment. This technique prioritizes time over heat to extract the flavors from the coffee and is brewed using medium-to-coarse ground coffee. The resulting cold brew is less acidic, has more body and is more subtle in flavor because it doesn’t come in contact with heat during the process.

Iced Americano, on the other hand, is brewed by adding hot espresso to chilled water with ice.

Cold brew requires more planning and preparation because it takes a minimum of 14 hours to brew but ultimately gives you great tasting coffee with low levels of acidity- also good for people with sensitive digestive systems. Cold brew can be brewed and stored for 7-10 days without affecting the taste, which can also save you time over the week! In terms of preparation, the cold brew has an advantage because it doesn’t require elaborate machinery, and can be made with ease at home. The Iced Americano, on the other hand, takes less time to prepare but requires an Espresso Machine.

Head to your local cafe and order up a cold brew or Iced Americano, if you haven’t already, you’ll definitely thank us for this. You can even make it yourself at home!
